Teaching Kids To Read

Barbara Said:

Teaching kids to read write and count is wrong .... report...?

We Answered:

I went to school in the 50's by the time we reached 11 we knew bits of
History & also ready for seniors had to be able to write short stories.
When my sons started school they could read, write & do basic maths.
They were took back to basics which confused them.I think its time kids were taught the old way.

Rose Said:

I have just watched Dispatches where they are teaching kids to read in UK?

We Answered:

There are lots of roles for teaching assistants, or you could train to be a teacher yourself.

One word of warning, if you do either of these things you will have to teach the national curriculum, which is causing the literacy problem in the first place.

Also you will be then subject to the targets that the government set, which will distract you from teaching children anything, and have you filling in pointless forms when all you want to do is help children.

I hope I haven't put you off trying

Robin Said:

How to teach kids read?

We Answered:

The best way to teach him to read and to increase the number of words he knows is to teach him all of his letter sounds. If he knows all of the sounds that the letters make consonants and short vowel sounds like in cat) then he will have the tools he needs to read a lot of words. Encourage sounding out the words. Three and half is still really young so I wouldn't push him too much beyond that. But by playing along of games that encourage him to listen to the sounds in words such what does a word end or begin with and by playing rhyming games you being training his ears to hear and seperate sounds in words. You can also play games that have him substituting sounds such as "say cat, now take away the /c/ and add a /b/ what word is it now" Good luck and have fun with it. The best thing to do for him is to make sure he is loving reading, because the more he loves it the more he will want to do it and the better he will get at it.
