Teaching Life Skills

Shirley Said:

Teach life skills to adults who are developmentally/learning disabled?

We Answered:

My 19 year old boys with Autism have "Personal Assistants" who help them with life skills. They work one-on-one with the boys.

I don't know if you are looking to provide your services for a group or individuals. I would think if you want to work with a group you would be a "teacher" or "instructor". If you work with individuals you would be an "assistant" or "provider". Each program would probably have it's own labels.

Kenneth Said:

what is unit approach in teaching life skills to children with mental retardation?

We Answered:

I'm not exactly sure what your special educator is referring to by unit approach, but my own approach is to wrap life skills into all aspects of the educational day. For instance, I'm teaching reading to a student with a very low IQ, and his parents are about to take him on a vacation. We will work on reading safety signs (information, restrooms, exit, enter, etc) so that he can be safe in a large, unfamiliar environment. I've been present when colleagues have taught manners, history, measuring, reading, and following instructions in a unit on Thanksgiving. I perceive Unit Approach to be a way to teach those skills that are not usually taught in a classroom (like manners and following instructions) while still trying to teach the academic content.

Jorge Said:

What life skills are you teaching your children?

We Answered:

I teach the same to mine, I don't want to send him out into the world not knowing the basics of life. So many people do too much for their kids and they end up hindering them when they experience real life for the first time. In addition, I try to teach my son compassion and understanding towards other people, to not be judgemental and to always try and keep an open mind no matter what your personal beliefs are.

What do people think of using sport as a way of teaching children in poverty their life skills?

We Answered:

Wonderful!!! Sports teach teamwork, cooperation, communication, patience, friendship, empathy/sympathy and a whole bunch of life skills that are translatable to everyday life. I teach life skills and have used sports, community service, games, etc to teach life skills to low income youth. Use anything you can to get them on a level playing field with the rest of the world.

Susan Said:

Is there a site that teaches life-skills like how to fill out a lease, how banking or university works?

We Answered:

How old are you, many community colleges offer a class like this, you can attend a community college at the age of 16 with the approval of your high school counselor. that is if you are under 18. Any other question feel free to ask me. They should also offer a class like this at your local high school, it was mandatory when my son was a student.

Good Luck
