Teaching Methods And Strategies

Juanita Said:

Why do we need to use varied methods and strategies in teaching?

We Answered:

This is because in any one class of students there is a wide range of ability levels. A teacher's job is to facilitate the learning of all students. This means you have to cultivate in your lessons a manner of instruction that successfully challenges every child, so at the lesson's conclusion they will have extended their understanding and skills. One or two methods of instruction may not necessarily adequately challenge all of the students in your class. Therefore, you need to incorporate enough methodologies and instructional strategies to teach to the multiple levels of existing student skills. If you teach something a student has already mastered, you really have not taught that particular pupil anything. If you teach in a way that goes beyond the ability of a certain student, you really have gained nothing as well. It is only when you teach at the next appropriate step that the child's current state of knowledge is ready to accept, that your instruction becomes understandable for the student to assume and apply. If you would like to know more about how you as a future teacher could accomplish this, please consider looking into 'Differentiated Instruction.' This is one way you use to create a positive dynamic for the learning of all students.

Assessment tools, like people, have certain strengths and certain limitations. By utilizing a variety of both formal and informal assessments you get a much clearer picture of where a student is at educationally. Keep in mind, correct evaluation is an absolutely essential tool for a successful teacher to have. Remember, as stated above, before you teach any lesson, you first need to know where each student is at ability-wise, in order to structure your lesson in an appropriately challenging manner. Good luck!

Christian Parents: What teaching methods (tactics/strategies) have you used to help...?

We Answered:

I could not agree with you more - leading your children to Christ is the most important job a parent has to do. We have four children. All are adults and all are Christians. The two oldest have 10 children and they are all professing Christians as well. So, I feel very grateful that we have propagated the love of God through out our family and to the in-loves as well.

Our story did not start out very successful. I married a non believer. And we were married for 10 years (2 kids) before she came to the Lord. I was a nominal Christian. Prayed, but no church or Bible study in my formative years. But I loved God and when the door finally opened I was ready to run through it. Friends started coming at me and I finally realized what it meant to be a Christian, to accept Jesus and to love Him with my heart, and soul and mind. My wife came to Him on the beach of Hawaii reading Josh McDowell's book, More than a Carpenter.

We decided to have two more children and she wanted to raise them in the church. So we started to go regularly. This was the beginning of our many trials. The two oldest, now 11 and 9 rebelled and hated having to go church. They hated church, hated us and could not understand why we were shoving our religion down their throat. And though they went to Sunday school and we talked about what it meant to be a Christian, it did no good. They were already set in their ways.

The two youngers were raised in the church. Knew Jesus from the cradle. We prayed regularly with them and talked often of God's love and how being a Christian was more than just attending church. We tried devotionals at home, but the kids did not really like that very much. But we continued our one on one discipling. Talks in the car. I remember our youngest son leading his friend to Jesus in the back seat of our car as we drove to their bowling league. It was so precious.

When the olders got to 14 and 16, the crisis hit. Both ended up in drug rehab. Their rebellion hit full stride and they (we) paid the price. Once the rebellion was broken they became more malleable and willing to discuss their faith, their spiritual journey and their love for God. It was a long wait, but worth it. The oldest daughter teaches Bible studies and has written a book. The oldest boy is a walking, talking minister, hoping to form a church. But it came as a result of their inner commitment to a lifestyle and thought process we built around them. They came on their own.

I hear of many families who saturate their children in the word of God regularly at home, hold devotions, attend fellowship groups, etc. I taught Sunday School for 16 years (Jr hi). But it did not work for us. The only thing that worked for us was loving them and talking to them and showing them our devotion to them and their lives.

That does not mean the other ways don't work. But they didn't for us. I have seen very successful families turn out successful kids doing the devotions, et. al. But I have also seen them go the other way. So I think the key is the love we show them. That they really know there is nothing that can separate them from the love of God and that we are the embodiment of that love to them.

Hope this helps.

Give the difference between Laboratory Teaching Method and Science Teaching Strategies.?

We Answered:

Lab Teaching is a more hands-on approach in which students have to apply their own critical thinking and knowledge to gain a conclusion to their experiement or lab procedure. The science teaching strategies are just ways that teachers utilize to explain to their students the subject of interest. This is usually not very "hands-on."
