Teaching Of English

Dana Said:

how to teach english language to chinese children.Where do i start in teaching them?

We Answered:

By teaching them something fun or something that they want to learn. This is how it is done in Kindergarten.
Food, play, short poems (remember Seuss), Chinese things like chopsicks, noodles, mother, dad. Sing, color or draw but do not spend so much time that it will loose their attention. Take breaks for exercise.
See below for an interesting website.

How can teaching English abroad help your career when you return?

We Answered:

I went to South Korea when I was 25 and fresh out of college. My degree wasn't in education, and I had no experience with kids. After a year of teaching elementary in Bundang, South Korea, I was hooked. Of course I wasn't a very good teacher that first year, but I worked hard.

After Korea, I Moved to New York City, and started teaching here on a provisional license. Didnt care for the kids here so much, but I found out I liked teaching adults even more. Now I'm working with adults, teaching composition and writing. I am also finishing a graduate degree in a closely related area.

I love my career, and I got started in Korea. Don't let any of these clowns tell you that you are too old.

That said, there are a lot of difficulties to working in the far east. Read through the ESL websites, but take it with a grain of salt. If you are adaptable, just go and find out for yourself.

What are some tips for teaching English as a second language?

We Answered:

Always, always, always begin with a Needs Analysis. Find out what THEY need to know. Do they need to know how to talk about their work? How to shop? How to fill in Social Security forms?

In other words, find out what they want and then teach them what they need to know in order to live.

There's nothing worse than giving them lessons on sightseeing or working through the lyrics of a pop song when they really need to know how to go shopping.

Nora Said:

Where do you start when teaching English to someone?

We Answered:

Do you know how to pronounce the word "ghoti"?
Actually it's "fish":
-- f like the gh in enough
-- o like the o in women
-- sh like the ti in nation

In English there is no one-to-one correspondence between sounds and the letter patterns that represent them. I find it easiest to memorize words by sight.

The grammar you'll just have to tackle step by step. Move from present to past tense.

Can I teach English to foreign countries without a teaching degree?

We Answered:

Maybe not a teaching degree, although that helps to document your competency, but you should at least have some coursework and experience in teaching English as a foreign language. You would need to be a native speaker of English, but even native speakers often do not have any idea how to teach their language to others. Some people assume it is easy, but it isn't. You would need at least some classes in theory and methodology so you wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel.

How much do English teaching jobs pay in Korea if you have a k-8 teaching credential?

We Answered:

I will give you an answer.

First, you need to know there are many foreigners teaching English in Korea (by the way, I am Korean living in Seoul) and other Asia countries such as China, Japan and etc. Nowadays, in Korea, I see many Americans without a job because they are saying that there are too many English teachers. On top of that, I can firmly argue that certificates are useless in Korea. Please don't try to compete with Korean English teachers or other foreigners by showing off your TESOL certificates or any other papers you might have. Even Korean high school students now possess all kinds of certificates including TESOL, Microsoft, Adobe and so on. If you truly want to succeed in teaching in foreign countries, go to places where there are not many English teachers like Vietnam.
I would say among all the foreigners in Korea who came here to teach English, 50% of them have a job as a teacher and get really high salary ($4000.00 - $7000.00), 30% of them are teaching private tutor and 20% of them are dating fine Korean girls and just enjoying their lives.
To support my answer, my uncle owns an Institute in Seoul. Good Luck!
