Teaching Reading Skills

Brent Said:

What are some easy to use methods to teach 5th graders reading skills?

We Answered:

Good reading skills are dependent on a good vocabulary. Make a list of the new vocab words from their readers and have a spelling bee. Only instead of spelling the words, your students have to give their meaning or use the word in a sentence to gain credit.

Another good one for oral reading is "popcorn." There are different ways to do this, but I like having one student start a reading selection. Then, after a paragraph or so, the teacher says, "popcorn!" and the student must select another student to read and the process starts again. If your students have confidence in their reading abilities, this can be entirely student directed.

Reading poetry aloud is also a great way to build reading skills. They get a feel for the rhythm of the language. You may want to model poetry reading before your students try it.

I need a game that teaches reading skills to kindergartners.?

We Answered:

You could use reader's theater where the students act out each character and use the dialogue in the story. The kids love it! Look up literature circles made to suit kindergarteners. You read the title and ask the students what they think the book is about. Then after you read a little of it, you stop and ask what they think will happen next. Get creative by asking definitions of certain words in the text. Maybe even get the kids to act out certain actions a character is performing in the book. Ask them how they would have reacted to certain situations differently than the character did. What do they think the consequences for those actions are. What do they think will happen to the character because of his or her actions. Etc.

Teaching developmental skills at a community college?

We Answered:

Yes, I would have said that most CC teachers have a Masters, but if you say that it is possible to teach with a B.S., I would guess that you could apply for a "non-tenure lecture position", or you could ask the if there is any way you could help out in the department.

If you were still considering taking up a Masters, you could try to coordinate this plan with teaching at the same CC, or teaching at the CC and taking courses at a local University. In the first way, you may get a tuition break; in either case, your goal is to help you get the job by showing that you intend to extend your knowledge. Somehow address this plan in your application (cover letter).

When teaching beginning reading skills which technique works best: a whole-language approach, a phonics approa?

We Answered:

I suggest that you be flexible. Be mindful that we learn differently,
Start by laying a good foundation in phonics, Add word families then whole language combine them . Remember there is a need to hear the spoken word as well as the need for the student to practice. Have the student(s) read orally to you and you read to the student(s).
