Teaching Romeo And Juliet

Rick Said:

Why should Romeo and Juliet be taught to freshmen at high schools?

We Answered:

Shakespeare was one of the most influential play writers of all time. It should be taught to freshmen because they should begin to read and understand middle english language (its how all of shakespeare's works are written). The reason they need to begin to understand his writing style is because come junior and senior year they will be reading plays like Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, maybe even Twelfth NIght and they are all written in middle english and are all famous works by William Shakespeare. By reading Romeo and Juliet freshman year, students will be more prepared fro the next english classes. Romeo and Juliet is also a tragedy and students should be introduced to this type of genre.

Romeo And Juliet by William Shakespeare

1. Romantic love can be beautiful and ennobling.

2. Passion Can Overtake Reason and Common Sense.

3. Immaturity and inexperience can lead to tragic endings.

4. Judge people by their character and personal qualities, not by their name or social standing.

5. Innocent children sometimes pay for the sins of their parents.

6. Fate acts through human folly.

Joanne Said:

What does the relationship between the Nurse and Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet teach us?

We Answered:

I would say that the nurse is more accepting, since she is okay with Juliet's relationship. As a lower class woman, she seems a little more in touch with reality and isn't caught up in her petty issues with others. Instead, she is focused on Juliet's happiness because she loves her.

I like the class angle here quite a bit. Shakespeare himself was middle class and often had a more negative view of the upper class than many other writers of his time.

Teaching Romeo and Juliet?

We Answered:

I always brought in the full costumes for the girls... and a hat for the boys. Then I made Juliet stand on a chair and gave two of the students enlarged pages so they could try to read the scene.

It's also always fun to show multiple versions of the same scene, to see how it has changed in popular culture throughout the years. The Zephirelli version and the Romeo+Juliet are great for this.

Other ways to do it, is divide the students into girl and boy groups... or partners and have chorus readings. For real excitement, all the girls can stand on chairs. You can also try to get the boys to do both parts in traditional style... depending on your class.

Romeo and Juliet - Scene 3 Help on essay?

We Answered:

A couple of answerers are basing their judgments of Frair Lawrence and the Nurse as being good parents becasue they help Romeo and Juliet do what they want to do. But look what winds up happening. The parents may have been asking their kids to do something that they didn't want to do, but if the kids had gone along with it, they'd probably have survived their teens. Parents often have to ask or tell their kids to do things that the kids don't want to do. Kids need to start realizing that the parents may indeed have the kids' bext interests at heart.

Put it in a more modern context:

Your parents insist that you eat everything on your plate before you get dessert because it's good for you to eat your vegetables, meat, etc. Grandparents are the ones who spoil their grandkids and let them eat ice cream and cake. Now, which is actually better for the kid?

In A Nutshell

And love itself can’t be taken for granted, either. The play actively poses the question of whether the title characters’ legendary romance is nothing more than infatuation.
