Teaching Social Skills

Gene Said:

Teaching Social Skills to a child with Asperger's - Parent has Asperger's too...?

We Answered:

You might want to consider using social stories. These are stories created that outline what is likely to happen in certain social situations, and what is expected of a child in those situations. There are many websites and books with examples of social stories. Here are a few:

Positively Autism (free newsletter - issue on social stories): http://www.positivelyautism.com/volume2i…

Social Stories Offical Website: http://www.thegraycenter.org/socialstori…

Polyxo.com - Social Stories: http://www.polyxo.com/socialstories/

A message board post with specific social stories: http://www.autism-pdd.net/forum/forum_po…

Your child's teachers may also have some ideas. Good luck to you!

Teaching social skills?

We Answered:

I often work with children who have various DSM diagnoses which inhibit building social skills. This particular teaching tool works well for kids, but I have never used this teaching tool for a child with autism. I imagine it would work well, though.

For children with emotional/behavioral issues we used to use Skillstreaming. It breaks down each social interaction into small steps. It works best in a group, but I imagine that it wouldn't be a problem to find a few other people to do this, too. Family, neghborhood friends, other kids in the school with social communication problems?

I don't know his range of ability, but there are books for older children, too, if he gets to the point where he's ready for more complex interactions.

How do I develop social skills?

We Answered:

I'm like you, I had difficulty when growing up, so I was isolated as a child. I'm in college now, and I'm still learning.

You need to socialize, to practice. The best thing to do is to fight the desire to avoid. I used to avoid people for fear of rejection too, but doing so just kept me from getting better, from practicing. Just talk to people...and talk small talk, leave the interesting stuff(unfortunately, you must do this) to close friends...it just takes practice.

God bless you, you can do it. I did it, and so can you :D
