Teaching Social Studies
Katherine Said:
What is a fun hands on learning method for teaching... social studies and english (reading)? We Answered:
This is what I concocted over the years and it seems to work.1. Know your audience. Kids like to read in what they are interested. Start with a topic they will like. For instance, I teach 75% black kids. So, I can get the majority of the kids to read let's say Martin Luther King.
2. Give them the speech that a person has to know their own history as well as other people's history. Ask them a few questions. You'd be surprised that few kids know anything about someone as famous as even MLK. That ought to get them started.
3. Give them a few paragraphs but end the page at a good exciting spot. (It is funny watching them turn the page over looking for the rest.) Then the hands will be raised and they will want to know where the rest is.
4. Now have them predict what will happen next. They love doing this. It gets the creative juices going. Repeat process until you get to the end of the story, biography summary, etc.
5. At the end hand them an A-Z sheet (don't remember the name of it.). Have them for each letter of the alphabet (except like Q and Z maybe) give a character trait, historical fact, setting, or whatever you want them to get out of the reading. For example C=Civil Rights Movement.
This is a great combination of ideas to get kids to read and read closely.

Is Demonstration Method applicable in teaching Social Studies? We Answered:
The best way to use it would be to describe wars by using the game risk. Or even some toys. Set up a simple model. It is not really hard and you could have the kids choose sides and act out wars. Then have them say how they might have changed strategy.Good Luck
