Uk Teaching Jobs

Hazel Said:

Living in the UK: How do I market myself to schools for teaching jobs if I'm not a EU/UK citizen?

We Answered:

Your marketability depends on the subject you teach. If you teach Maths you dont need to do much. If you teach English then stay where you are.

how does clearing system (UK) work - when applying for teaching job?

We Answered:

Hi there, I'm actually going through the same process myself. First, you must apply for clearing through UCAS at ucas.ac.uk. Register for the 2010 application, and then once you're done with registration, you can begin preparing your application. You will not be able to indicate any schools or courses, though. You might want to contact the schools you're interested in to see if they require a personal statement and references. They charge 19 pounds for the application. Once you're done with the application, and you've submitted your application, UCAS will provide you with a clearing number, and then you will call each university you're interested in with that clearing number to see what they have available. But that's about it. You do have to fulfill certain requirements, which they list at the website, but pretty much, you're good to apply until 20 Sept. So hurry and get that application done! The sooner the better for you! Hope this helps!

Has anyone from UK found a job in Brazil teaching English?

We Answered:

Congratulations, you have good prospects for landing a job at a reputable school. As abovementioned, the British Council should be your starting point. It is not present in many cities and some branches were closed as Brazil is no longer in their list of priority countries, but it still has close links with several institutions.

In addition, it is a huge country, with very different markets and socio-economic realities. From my experience, there aren't many specialised agencies, it is more of a matter of job-hunting in the right places. Demand for EFL/ESOL teachers is great, but not all schools are equipped for quality teaching, if you know what I mean. To get references of schools it would help if you could narrow down a few cities. Franchise schools like Wizard, Wisdom and CCAA are to be avoided as staff is usually little qualified and their 'methodology' probably defies most of the best practices you have learned in your EFL training.

Below follows a link for the national TESOL association. Hope that helps and feel free to contact me.
