IMO if you were to ask the schools/universities this question you're going to get a biased one, because they're into recruiting students.

I would probably evaluate what field I want to get into (residential, business, environmentally-safe homes, etc.) first.

Then I would contact 5 architects that I admire in the field I would want to focus on. I would pose the questions you have listed stating you admire the work they have done in their field.

Most likely they'd be willing to share a lot of information with you if you pose the question correctly. It's also called networking. It may lead to a good potential business contact for you in the future when you graduate. You may even end up interning with them upon graduation.

I have no idea what standards are.

But at any rate there are some excellent public (cheap) engineering universities in the USA. Arizona state has an excellent program; as well as incredible women. Virginia tech has an excellent engineering school as well. It is in the beautiful blue ridge students and you will get a blend of culture as Students from Virginia (southern USA) and Maryland (distinct mid Atlantic culture) and further north go to this school. Penn state also has an excellent engineering program.

No matter where you go foreigners are generally accepted with open arms (and legs). Don't believe all the anti-American nonsense.
I believe it is called mechanical engineering here in the states.
