How many colleges and universities are in the CITY of Chicago? (suburbs not included)? We Answered:
To some degree, this will depend on your definition of a college/university. The National Center for Education Statistics allows you to search for colleges by city. Its results include everything that might count as a college/university, including many vocational programs (barber colleges, etc,), community colleges, and so on. It lists 79 specifically within Chicago:http://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/index.a…
Oddly, the Illinois Board of Higher Education site lists 86 programs when you search for Chicago as the Institution City, but when you look at the results, you'll see that many of the city listings are actually blank and seem to be for out-of-state schools:
http://www.ibhe.state.il.us/InstitutionP…
(you'll need to actually run the search, the link for results can't be pasted)
What's odd is that, if you take out the "blanks," you have fewer than the DOE listing. Still, it might be worth looking over the two lists to see if institutions are listed on one but not the other.
Hope this is helpful!
