What do you think of Columbia Southern University online?

We Answered:

This place has one [ONE] full time faculty member, probably this guy Mr. Poche Waguespack, Dean of Students.

No campus, no library, no nothing

No regional accreditation - for Alabama, it would be The Southern Association. Here is Columbia Southern's web page about accreditation: http://www.colsouth.edu/accreditation.ht…
Guess what isn't there ! Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities!

I actually met one person in my academic career who got a job after obtaining an online degree - and that was for an unaccredited Indian Tribal College in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota.

Don't waste your money. Go to a real, accredited college that has a campus.

Good luck to you

Does anybody have any experience with Columbia Southern University?

We Answered:

I have a B.S. from CSU. First you have to make sure that CSU's accreditation from DETC fulfills your needs. CSU is not regionally accredited, but is accredited by DETC, which is an accrediting agency recognized by the federal government for accrediting institutions of post-secondary education. The State of Florida, where I live, accepts DETC accredited degrees for all state licensure that requires a degree, so it was perfect for me. The only real problem with DETC accreditation is that many regionally accredited universities will not accept the credits toward one of their degrees. On the other hand there are many that do.

Like many online programs, I have to tell you that you will basically be on your own... you generally don't get much help from the professors, so if you are a very independent student it is great, but not so great for people who need a lot of "hand holding." The best thing about CSU is that there are no scheduled times that you have to be online, unlike many other schools. You also work independently and never have to do group projects in which other people can affect your grade. That is another big plus to me, compared to places like University of Phoenix that are big on group projects, which I hate.

The tuition is also cheap compared to most other scools. The bottom line is I think that CSU is one of the best online programs available, as long as you can work pretty independently and the accreditation suits your needs.

Is Columbia Southern University a valid university?

We Answered:

So your 'friend' is an expert in higher education? Her doctorate in Higher Education is from WHERE?

Ok, that said..... go to www.chea.org to learn about national vs regional accreditation. This site is THE last word on the subject (as far as the US Dept of Ed is concerned, there is no difference between national and regional).

As for SOME of the academic snobs out there, most of whom cannot differentiate between an elbow and the gluteus maximus, (this also goes for the corporate snobs), Columbia Southern is a fine institutiioon. I have met many of their instructors and administrators. Their programs are fine. You get all the basics you would get at any other MBA program.

if you are SO concerned, then check out Capella, Walden, Nova, and Western Governors University for regionally accredited online MBA programs.

Where can i find info about Columbia Southern University?

We Answered:

You can go to this website
www.universities.com/Distance_Learning… - 45k -
or you can call this number 1-800-977-8449 and ask for them to send you information on this school. If you want to here about it from students that go there go to myspace.com, register (it's free) and see if that school is listed and what students are saying about it. On this website the professors are also graded by former students, so it makes it easier to know which professor is best to take a class with and so that you will know what to expect.

Discuss It!
