Deakin University Courses

Denise Said:

I want to know some information about deakin university for design courses ?

We Answered:

G'day,

I used to be int. students in Melbourne from South-East Asia and now actively assisting int. students in Melbourne. I will try to help you with your questions:
1. Deakin University (DU) is one of (only) 43 universities in Australia. It is a public university and fully accredited. Therefore you do not have to worry abt the standard of their courses, especially the ones offered to the int. students as they have to be thoroughly assessed for accreditation.
2. Depends what do you mean by "good university". What I can tell you is that DU is a medium-sized university in regards to students population (international & Australian). Therefore it has a good teacher to student ratio. This means that there are more attention can be given to the international students if it seems that they are getting into problem of following the study materials.
3. When the Australian Good University Guide still giving assessment for the "University of The Year" award, DU is the only university in Australia that got the award twice, in 1995 and 2000. However there are no formal university ranks that published by the Australian Government as all universities in Australia are tightly controlled and therefore has pretty much the same standard.
4. What sort of design? Interior design? Fashion Design? Art Design? There are other uni that also quite well-known for designs such as Swinburne University of Tech and RMIT uni. Australia has quite a lot of well-known fashion designer as well such as Allanah Hill, Ken Done etc.
5. Uni of Wollongong (UOW) is pretty much the same as DU. Public uni, fully accredited, equally recognised and medium-sized population. The difference is that UOW is located in a smaller town abt 3hrs drive from Sydney, whereas DU's Melbourne campus is located pretty much in Melbourne. So if you like small town & quiet life, then take UOW. Mind you, considering that you come from one of the most crowded country in the world, even Sydney city (biggest city in Australi) is still feel quieter in comparison.

Hope this helps. If you have more questions, you can e-mail me at mikegun(at)studentfirst.com.au. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia.

Stacey Said:

completing bioscience at deakin then transferring to melbourne uni to do dentistry?

We Answered:

I am quite sure you would be able to transfer, the degrees are standardized for vic uni's, it my understanding that enter scores are lower in geelong than melbourne, my advice would be to email an enrolement officer at both uni's and see what they have to say.
Best of luck

Earl Said:

If I got around 60 and lower for my ENTER/ATAR, would I be able to do Medicine if I keep doing more courses?

We Answered:

If you get a degree (in anything) and then apply for medicine, they will not look at your ENTER at all. They'll just go by your results in your first degree (and the GAMSAT and an interview, I believe).

Andy Said:

Is this Deakin University in Melbourne (Australia) a good university to study?

We Answered:

G'day,

Deakin University is one of (only) 41 universities in Australia and they are tightly controlled, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content.

Deakin university is the only university in Australia that has received University of The Year award twice (the 2nd in 1999). Therefore the reputation is good. Deakin has recently tighten the selection criteria so they are more selective in offering a place to students. However they also have a lower student-teacher ration which means that the help is there for students who are struggling with their studies.

Hope this helps. E-mail me at mikegun@studentfirst.com.au if you have any more questions abt study in Australia. Good luck on your study and welcome to Australia :)
