What my friend (whose sister did undergrad is doing a grad degree now) says is that it's kind of a geek's haven. Studying is extremely serious, but you learn an awful lot. What struck me was that they debate for fun, apparently - not my lifestyle, but whatever works for them.

I do know that in academic circles, it's an extremely well-respected name. My impression is that it's more academically rigorous than every school that I can think of, including the Ivies and the big-name public schools, but I don't have any real experience with the UChicago.

Chicago is a nice area, but U of C is located in a not-so-hot part of town. So if lifestyle's a major concern for you, I might not be too keen on going here.

The ranking has experienced some fluctuation over the years. Last year's list of the top 15 undergraduate programs also included the Illinois Institute of Technology, Auburn University, and the Rhode Island School of Design. At the graduate level, last year's list also featured the University of Pennsylvania, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), the Rhode Island School of Design, Texas A&M, and the University of Illinois. Each of these programs just missed the top 15 cutoff for 2008. It would not be surprising, based on nearly a decade of results, to see these programs reappear toward the top again next year. In this article are the best colleges in the US to attend for a degree in architecture.

Every school is different, especially when going to other countries. You'll have to find the universities you want to go to and contact them directly to find out what their rules are.

There are several universities with regional accredition but should nevertheless be shut down. Many of these are HBCUs, with University of the District of Columbia among the worst.

For different reasons, many "for profit" universities, such as University of Phoenix, should at least lose their regional accreditation, because they make a mockery of degree standards.
