Universities In Illinois

Oscar Said:

Is there a list of Illinois Universities that offer surgical training?

We Answered:

You won't find any medical schools specifically for surgery because surgeons must first earn and MD degree before entering a surgery residency to learn surgery.

If you want to be a surgeon, you first need to go to college and complete the pre-medical coursework required by the medical schools you might like to attend. See the book Medical School Admission Requirements for details. Medical schools in Illinois include Rosalind Franklin in N. Chicago, Loyola in Maywood, Northwestern in Chicago, Rush in Chicago, Southern Illinois in Springfield, U Chicago, and U. Illinois-Chicago.

Most students complete a four year bachelor's before going on to four years of medical school. However Northwestern has a seven year combined undergraduate/MD program called the Honors Program in Medical Education. See second link for details.

Medical students normally do one or more surgery rotations as part of their clinical training. After medical school, if you want to be an abdominal surgeon you would go on to do a general surgery residency. Information on becoming a surgeon and on general surgery can be found at the last three links.

What are Some Good Medical Universities in Illinois?

We Answered:

Where you go is really not a huge deal. That being said, there is an advantage to going to a school with a medical school, especially at that school's medical school when you apply. You are lucky that Illinois has so many ;)

See question 2 of my blog for more general factors that can help you.

What are some good universities in Illinois with a Nursing Program?

We Answered:

Yikes, I agree with Expert RN. I wish I would have just gone straight into pre-med or a Bachelors in BioChemistry or something and then applied to med school..what I would give! Nursing is truly a waste of time. Top 5 in most stressful jobs and the pay is really awful. I guess I am thankful to have a job since most nurses don't and are being outsourced by the foreign nurses they keep bringing over.

What Universities in illinois offer a bachelors in exercise physiology?

We Answered:

No one answers my questions either; it's a bummer, haha.

University of Illinois offers a major in physiology, but the list I'm looking at does not specify which type. I'm sure you could customize it or create an interdisciplinary major to suit.

Illinois State offers a major in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine.

A really great website to search for colleges with your specific major is CollegeBoard.com. It's been my best friend since I began my college search. I hope this helps a little..?

What are the universities in Illinois that offer the best Zoology programs?

We Answered:

U of I has a good program, but it's not as interactive as those at some of the smaller schools. Eastern Illinois also has a good program, and the classes are smaller and it's a little cheaper. SIU Carbondale is also good, but I have no experience with this school myself. I earned my B.S. and M.S. in environmental biology at Eastern - I received a great education there.

Often the programs are not called 'zoology', but are the equivalent and you can specialize in zoological classes.
