The obvious strong NYC colleges would be Columbia and NYU. Columbia is the stronger college and it is an ivy league. Very tough to get into. NYU is also a great school! Both are very expensive as well.

There are no SUNY universities within NYC. NYC has their own system, CUNY (City University of NY) which is about the same price. Here's CUNY website. I recommend you check out other CUNY colleges, but I believe Hunter College is exactly what you're looking for. It's in Manhattan, it's the flagship CUNY college, about same price as SUNY, well-respected and well known.

If you insist on SUNY, the nearest university with connections to get you an internship that I would recommend is SUNY Stony Brook. It's 45 miles from Manhattan. Takes about 1 hr to drive or 1.5 hr by Long Island Rail Road (Penn Station <-> Stony Brook station). SUNY Stony Brook is one of the four SUNY flagship universities. The next best thing is SUNY Old Westbury or SUNY Farmingdale but I wouldn't recommend Old Westbury, it feels like a jr college campus with limited options. Farmingdale is more a technical college which is fine if you're into IT related field but limited for others.

No, it does not matter what undergraduate school you go to when applying to graduate school (medical school). The admissions board values GPA, activities, test scores, and interviews much more than whether your school was well-known.

Some good schools in NY that I know of are NYU and Columbia. Columbia has an excellent medical school and hospital where you may want to look into for volunteering.

You should really be looking for a school that you are capable of succeeding in. Your performance, qualifications, and enthusiasm will be much more important than the name of your undergraduate school.
