Applying to the University of Johannesburg (South Africa) from Canada?

We Answered:

You can go to their website, www.uj.ac.za, I'm sure you can apply online. You may have to courier certified copies of certain documents. You will also have to obtain a study permit from the South African Department of Home Affairs. It is not a bad university.

There is cheap student accomadation at the university, but you might prefer renting a flat in the Auckland Park area. There are lots of complexes in the area within walking distance with mainly student occupants (I would recommend "The Yard", which is classy, secure, within walking distance and not that expensive). As it is a residential area, there are also some people in the area who let out garden cottages to students.

I would steer away from the University of South Africa option mentioned by another answerer. I tried to register with them for my Master's degree and got nothing but grief- and this before I was even registered! I settled on another institution instead.

Anybody know the Uni of Johannesburg?

We Answered:

I’ve studied at Wits and studied and worked at University of Johannesburg (then RAU). I personally found that I felt safer at UJ than at Wits. However, from what I have heard from my former colleagues the atmosphere at UJ has changed and standards have been slipping since the mergers. Most of my former colleagues have since left for other institutions, and after the conversation I had yesterday another will soon be leaving as well.

UJ now has campuses in Auckland Park, Doornfontein and Soweto. The exchange does sound like an exciting opportunity on both sides but if it is not at the Auckland Park campus I don’t think I would recommend it for "French mummy's boys."

Good luck.

What are the pros and cons of careers in risk management, quantitative analysis ?

We Answered:

It's a numbers job so if you like nembers it's cool. Accounting will be really useful for you. I know it's a boring class to take but do it. Once you have the basics you can learn the rest on the job.

Don't over-specialize! It's a great starting place but look for opportunities to expand beyond being a quant. Unless you love being a quant of course.

University of South Africa?

We Answered:

Your degree from UNISA is worthless. I know this for a fact. I have one and they won't recognise it. i also have a degree from WITS which is recognised. I am not the only person. Last year 2 guys wanted to work overseas, both of them I know well, neither of their UNISA degrees were recognised. Change to WITS if you can.
