I know a lot of people who commuted from Coventry to Perry Barr (the main campus) each day, and it took them about 20 minutes on the train.

Most of those people decided to move closer to uni, though. After the hassle and cost of commuting, it was cheaper to live in the area!

And 9am lectures?! I very much doubt it unless you're doing teacher training! I think my faculty is the only one which starts at 9!

No. UK universities don't have things like that; they trust that their students are adults and can look after themselves. You can stay where you like. However, almost all universities do offer guaranteed accomodation for all first-year undergraduates if you want it. The accomodation office should also keep lists of share houses/flats that are privately rented in the area should you choose that option.
