Michigan State University VS University of Michigan Ann Arbor?

We Answered:

You can do a good pre-med program in either school.

You should consider Michigan Tech also, because an Engineering degree is a good backup for Medical School in case you don't make it.

I am a high school junior who is looking to be accepted to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Any Advice?

We Answered:

You're in.
Here are the stats for freshman accepted in 2007:
Middle 50% GPA: 3.7-3.9.
Test score ranges of the middle 50%: SAT Verbal: 590 - 690. SAT Math: 630 - 730. ACT: 27 - 31
The only problem you may encounter is that you are OVERqualified. If you're overqualified for the school, they might not think you're entirely serious--that you're applying just as a safety--and reject you. I really think you should apply to the Honors Program (which would solve that problem).
Ann Arbor is a great college town. Both my cousins went to U Mich there and LOVED it--one loved it so much she stayed there for grad school. Their academics--including math--are great.

How would you start a club at University of Michigan Ann Arbor?

We Answered:

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership offers resources to do so. To become an officially recognized student group, you must go through many steps such as writing a charter and such.

A very comprehensive guidebook is available here:

However, I highly suggest joining some of the existing service groups on campus to see if they are what you are looking for. To be honest, starting a new group can be a big hassle and there are already TONS of service organizations available to UM students, so finding interested students and starting a club from the ground-up can be quite the task. May I suggest looking into Circle K (www.umcirclek.org) which is a general service organization that holds many service projects each week to choose from? There are also more specialized service groups such as The Detroit Partnership, where students work to improve the Detroit area. Best of luck.

University of Michigan Ann Arbor Pros and Cons?

We Answered:

Pros: AMAZING academics, world renouned in fact, called the harvard of the west. And despite that, the sports scene is crazy good too. Football games are insane. There are like 1,000 clubs/organizations to get involved in, Largest alumni base of any school (400,000 +) which will help when looking for a job. Ann Arbor is an amazing town (contrary to what the first answerer said). My brother is currently a sophomore and he's said he has truly never been bored down there. Many recognized musicians perform there, and if not- Detroit is only half an hour away. The 40,000 undergrads give you the great big-school feel, but there are a ton of ways to make it smaller through learning communities, UROP, clubs, sports, etc... You can make a big school small, but you can't make a small school big. There is a 25 or 30 cap on freshman math and writing courses. Freshman seminars are available (small classes). It's a great atmosphere.

Cons: out of state tuition is the national highest for a public university, and you can probably get a comparable education at your best state school for 1/3 the price. And that's honestly the only con I can see.
