It depends on what kind of technical institute you go to. More often than not, technical institutes are more focused on the degree you want to get. Universities are more respected, yes, but they have a lot of superfluous classes that most degrees don't really -need- such as sciences when you're going for a computer degree.

I went to a technical institute and I have a very nice high paying job. Just make sure that if you go to a technical institute that it has all the right credentials and is well respected. It will save you money in the long run as opposed to going to a University, which can be vastly more expensive, but can end up getting you just the same degree, but being more time consuming.

ITT Tech is a technical school. Their focus is different than college in that they focus on specific training for a career. A college, OTOH, looks to provide a well rounded education, hence the typical college's distribution requirements of english, math, science, humanities. ITT Tech does not have such course offerings.
