Free Worksheets For Kindergarten

Cheryl Said:

My child is too old for preschool and too young for kindergarten, what now?

We Answered:

You need to talk to your child's teachers first and see if they can provide your child with work closer to his ability. If not, then you need to find an environment suitable for him. The problem is that I don't know if many other preschools would be any different. Are you working full time? Would it be possible to send your son in the mornings (what sounds like more structured time) and bring him home or find a good daycare in the afternoon?

Now that your child is 5, one option would be to go ahead and talk to the elementary school to see what they would think. Express your concerns and see if they'd at least test him for Kindergarten readiness. He's still a bit young, but some kids can handle it.

{edit} I disagree with Bobbi. My mom has taught Kindergarten 36 years now and has begun noticing that the age doesn't matter as much as the maturity level. She's held back 6-year-olds and sent on 5-year-olds. I myself was 5 for 2 weeks before I started Kindergarten. I was one of the youngest in the class. I graduated with a 3.8, 12th in my class.

It's great that you are encouraging your daughter to learn some of the information and skills she will need for kindergarten. It really helps. Way to go, Mom!
