all measurement is a comparison between something that can be physically measured and a defined standard

Beauty and goodness can NOT be measured

the length of a string Can be measured

you need to know what you are measuring
what is the standard of measure; Metric is the universal common system, meters, newtons of force, kilograms of mass. America uses a version of old English feet pounds etc

start with what interests him and pick some things and say How many, how much ,how long , how fast, whatever makes sense

then you both decide on the standard for comparison

you get a little black book called "the Pocket reference" by T J Glover, hardware stores may have it

at first use common objects in the home.

make your own ruler from a stick and mark off lengths and fractions

ask what is a day, a moth a year? how do you judge time? ( tricky) you cannot put time "side by side

make a simple balance for comparing weights

go to the library and find simple books on how thing work in the young people section.
