Main characters:James II
Mary, his daughter
William of Orange, her husband.
Causes:
James II was a Catholic, and believed in Divine Right of Kings. However, the English Civil Wars earlier in the century had established that Parliament had a major role in English politics.
While James had no son, his Catholicism wasn't seen as a major threat - he was 52 when he became king in 1685 (well past average life expectancy at the time), and thus, on his death, the throne would pass to his daughter Mary (a Protestant).
However, in June 1688 James' wife gave birth to a healthy son. This raised the prospect of a Catholic succession, so the Whig majority in Parliament got together and offered the throne to Mary and her Dutch husband William of Orange (both Protestants).
James fled to France, Parliament deeming him to have abdicated on 11 December 1688.
The leaders were the senior Whig MPs in Parliament, plus William of Orange.
