how to do metric conversions?

We Answered:

You will understand it better if you do the conversions yourself. This table will assist you in that feat:

SI (metric) prefixes:

k (kilo) = x1000 = e3
M (Mega) = x1000000 = e6
G (Giga) = x1000000000 = e9
T (Tera) = x1000000000000 = e12
P (Peta) = x1000000000000000 = e15
E (Exa) = x1000000000000000000 = e18
Z (Zetta) = x1000000000000000000000 = e21

d (deci) = /10 = e-1
c (cent) = /100 = e-2
m (milli) = /1000 = e-3
µ (micro) = /1000000 = e-6
n (nano) = /1000000000 = e-9
p (pico) = /1000000000000 = e-12
f (femto) = /1000000000000000 = e-15

Measurement Conversion Help?

We Answered:

Go to the first website I referenced to see what each prefix means. I will do number 1 to explain how to use it.

1) Look at the power, for example centi is -2 and meter would be 0, the movement from -2 to 0 would be +2, or 2 decimal places to the LEFT. 14 centimeters would be 0.14 meters

4) To go from "centi" to "kilo" you have to move from -2 to +3 for kilo which is a movement of +5, meaning you move the decimal to the LEFT 5 places. 285.9 centimeters would be 0.002859 kilometers.

5) To go from bigger to smaller you have to move from kilometer with a power a +3 to centimeter with a power of -2, so that would be a movement of -5 so you move the decimal RIGHT 5 places. 0.006394 km would be 639.4 cm.

+ movement is LEFT
- movement is RIGHT

There is more math involved but thats a simple way to do it. hope that helps.

If that doesn't help you can always check your answer on the second reference I gave.

ok KHDbdcm= kilo,hecto,deca,base,deci,centi,milli

King Henry Died but didnt call mom-helps u remember. k so deci is the small d. ok b stands for base which is liters, grams, meters etc. ok so start at the d and count 1 over to base(liter) so show a curved line going before the 6 so the answer is .6 liters. idk what else you can show for work. remember King Henry Died but didnt call mom. best way

Youll thank me on the test. ull be like King Henry Died but didnt call mom .yes ty paul so much. and in advance your welcome

Am I Doing these Metric Conversions the right way?

We Answered:

Believe it or not the metric system is supposed to be easy. In fact it is, but, like any other foreign language, you first have to know the vocabulary. Stick with the physics. You will get it. Remember, physics is hard now not because it is hard but because it is new.

Now, to your question, let’s see if we can simplify this. The slashes separate the abbreviations that are used in the metric system. No slash means the abbreviations stand for metric units that are different by a factor of ten. One slash means that the metric units differ by a factor of 100 and two slashes mean that the metric units differ by a factor of 1000.

M stands for ‘mega’ A Mg is a megagram, or 1 million grams. At a thousand times less than a mega is the kilo. Kilo stands for one thousand. 1000 x 1000 = 1 million! A kilogram, or kg, is a thousand grams.

The ‘H’ stands for hecta, which means 100. 100 x 10 = 1000. Hecta is not used very much but you could have a hectameter, or hm. The ‘D’ stands for ‘deka’. We get the word decade from this prefix. As you know a decade is ten years. A DL is a decaliter, or ten liters.

The ‘U’ stands for ‘unit’. This is a quantity that has no prefix. A gram, or a meter is a unit. The ‘D’ stands for ‘deci’, which is a tenth. A dm is a tenth of a meter. This is a bit tricky! Dm is a decameter while dm is a decimeter. The American dime, or tenth of a dollar comes from ‘deci’.

A tenth of a tenth is a hundredth. The ‘C’ stands for ‘centi’, 1/100. One hundredth of a dollar is cent, which is short for centi. The ‘M’ stands for milli. This is a bit confusing because ‘milli’ sounds like it should mean a millionth. However, it actually means 1/1000. This is a tenth of a hundredth.

A thousand times smaller than a millimeter, is a micrometer. The ‘u’ stands for micro. This should actually be the Greek letter for ‘m’ and it is called a ‘mu’. A microjoule is a millionth of a joule. The ‘n’ stands for ‘nano’ and it is a thousand times smaller than the micro. A nanometer, or nm, is a billionth of a meter.

The ‘p’ stands for ‘pico’. A picowatt, or pW is a trillionth of a watt and it is a thousand times smaller than a nanowatt.

I know that this is a lot to take in at one sitting. But if you just go over it a few times it will get easier. Remember, this is not hard, it is new. When it stops being new it will stop being hard. It will stop being new sooner the more you review it.
