Ella Said:

Explain how the discovery of life elsewhere in our solar system may affect the explanations for origin of life?

We Answered:

The problem with panspermia is that any object raised outside of the earth's protective atmosphere and magnetic field will be exposed to steady ionising radiation that will sterilise all known lifeforms in about a million years. Although it is possible that objects (such as spallated rock) may travel between nearby planets in this timeframe, it is not possible to travel between stars in such a timeframe.

You might observe that of all the planets in our solar system, we find ourselves on the one planet that is precisely tuned to the long term maintenance of organic chemistry. That is not a coincidence. It is telling us that such an environment is a necessity for life to evolve.

The earth and other planets have an abundance of other elements such as silicon, yet no known complex chemistry has ever been found on earth or elsewhere based on silicon, boron, arsenic or indeed any other element. That act indicates the necessity for carbon in life-chemistry.

There is some speculation that the aqueous environments that MIGHT exist on Europa and Mars may have life. If we explore these environments and find life, we would next need to determine if that life came from earth o arose independently. If it arose independently then we could compare the local environment with that on earth and try to discover what common factors may have complex organic chemistry to evolve into living chemistry.

Cheers!

questions on the sun?

We Answered:

Your first thoughts were correct. It contracted from a nebula.
It is where you will find 99.9% of the mass of the solar system...yep its big ;))
