Looking at this might give you some ideas. You can access reports in pdf downloadable format. You are on the right track. You could devise your own timed, pre-test.

How should I approach my son's 3rd grade tchr about her inconsistent grading & putting red F's on papers @ 3rd?

We Answered:

You said it best in your question. Just like you said, ask her how can you help your son, you need to know what she expects for each assignment so that you can guide, not do his home work but guide your son in the right direction. Tell her you are concerned with your son's grade because normally he does very well in school. Never come across like you know more or best it will only hurt your son in the end. Be professional and polite when asking questions or showing your concerns. This helps a great deal will you want to transfer your son to another room with a different teacher. Ask about the "F" being big and red. I myself think that seeing that big fat "F" on a paper is harsh and cruel and does something to chip away at an impressionable young child's self esteem. Again, always ask in a calm manner, never become confrontational or accusatory. Good luck

How do you get a boisterous group of second graders to quiet down?

We Answered:

A game such as copycat where the children copy a pattern you are making or clapping can bring in the attention, also finger rhymes for younger children or songs. A clapping pattern that everyone has to follow can help me bring classes into focus when they are not paying attention.

As far as the sloppy work on worksheets, start giving stickers or tiny rewards for good work. Soon they will pick up.

Another listening trick if you have one or two students being a bit mischevious during a group time is to acknowledge the GOOD behaviour of the child next to them. e.g. I like the way you are sitting quietly on the carpet Stevie, and then the children next to him will usually stop and try and do the right thing.

Little rewards help, but don't overdo them.

THey probably don't see the environment as a "learning environment" which makes it hard, little things help to make it look more "schoolish" - e.g. pencil tins, stickers (stickers help soooo much). A reward chart would be great with a whole group reward for good behaviour over a period of time.

Don't say something you won't do. Be consistent with them and let them know when you say something you expect it to happen.

If all else fails, talk to the parents and say if so-and-so doesn't behave they will have to sit out and not join in because they are spoiling it for everyone.

Good luck.

How can I teach my second grader to write better?

We Answered:

I would have a meeting with the teacher .
My son is in 1st grade he was having trouble holding a pencil they ended up using a grip to help him hold his pencil right this might be a problem with your son as well but you said he does good at home to .

There maybe to many distraction's in the classroom .

I would have a meeting or try talking to the teacher about your concerns !

Some of these are free and some are just reasonably priced. There may be a few that are geared toward younger kids, I think I weeded them out of the list, but I might have missed a few.
